I think they could behave like Europeans and so their culture doesn't go extinct or something like that. Maybe because they need to learn or maybe he wants to learn more about European people and what they learn.

I think that what kept him to keep trying to keep Maori Culture alive was that he wanted to make his people proud and studied very hard on everything at schoo
